What Every Florida Homeowner Should Know About Lowering Electricity Bills

Florida mortgage rate shoppers can still find interest rates in the high 4 percent range, and the saving don’t have to stop there!   Florida homeowners can also save a pretty penny on their electric bills by implementing a few basic “green energy” steps.

On average, American households spend $2,200 a year on their electric bills, with the average home’s “carbon footprint” coming in at about twice the size of the average automobile.

Whether your goal is to save money – or you just want to be a bit kinder to Mom Nature – this 5-minute piece from the Today Show on NBC is worth watching.

In it, you’ll learn how you can cut your energy consumption by as much as 15 percent, simply by being more aware of your daily energy use habits.

As you can see, this video clip focuses on a device called a Power Monitor, which retails from $30 to $100, depending on the model.   The Power Monitor keeps track of the actual cost of using your appliances or lights, charging a laptop, or any other household energy use.

Among the things found when using a Power Monitor for your home, researchers found that:

  • A plugged-in phone charger without the phone attached runs you about $0.10 per hour
  • Cooking with a microwave averages around $0.88 per hour
  • A typical large screen TV costs $0.06 per hour to operate

It goes without saying that simply cutting off lights when rooms aren’t in use saves money, too.

But, as you can see – making a few minor changes — most of which aren’t inconvenient — can put a decent size dent in your family’s energy bill by as much a a couple of hundred dollars each year.

One of the best ways we can cut down on electricity is by replacing old incandescent light bulbs. The new Led and Halogen bulbs give off greater light and use less energy.

Water heaters and Air conditioners are the big ones when it comes to saving energy, I try to keep the fans running as much as I can as they use less power but on hot days in Florida sometimes you have no choice but to turn on the air conditioning.

This demonstration is a perfect example, showing the amount of energy we throw away and the amount of money we burn. I mean, if you are saving anything up to $300 a year it is well worth it not to mention doing your bit to save the planet.
